Why we use buffer tank in chilled water system?
The buffer tank provides extra water volume in a closed chilled water system, it should be installed at the suction side of the pump. The unit is designed with an internal baffle. As the system water enters the tank it is forced up and over the baffle before dropping back down to exit the tank, this ensures proper water circulation and full use of the tank volume.
Required system volume = Chiller Tons x Recommended System Volume/ton
Actual system volume = Piping Volume + Terminal Equipment Volume
Tank Size Required (Gallons) = Actual Volume - Required Volume
